he had instructed me to relate to Mr. Johnson by admitting that Mr. Hayter was excluded from Government House not, or not entirely, for the reason which the Governor had previously given me to state, but principally for some other reason. In support of this observation, I have to mention the following facts.
29. Long before I was formally appointed Private Secretary (October 1880), the Governor had told me that Mr. Hayllar had been excluded from Government House for bringing to the boudoir a book of obscene pictures and that, previous to his exclusion, he had gone on a steamlaunch excursion which Mr. Hayllar had arranged with the Governor and others and from which he backed out at the last moment. I was told this circumstantially for the first time when I happened to suggest to the Governor a reconciliation with Mr. Hayllar.
30. From the time when I entered upon my duties formally as Private Secretary (October 1880) until the alleged assault took place (April 1881), I heard little from the Governor on the subject. But from that time onwards His Excellency spoke to me frequently on these affairs. I was now told more details than before. I was told by the Governor that the book which Mr. Hayllar had brought was the Catalogue of
